Jiyong Kim shift between painting and sculpture, examining how familiar images and objects become estranged again within the picture plane and return to the problem of seeing itself. Family photographs and portraits of his father, windows and fish tanks, rainy landscapes, flounders and butterflies do not remain fixed as private memories or symbols; instead, they become conditions through which the act of seeing organizes itself. Rather than treating familiar subjects as something already known, the artist follows the process by which they are re-evaluated and recalibrated within the image. The flatness of photography, the volume and atmosphere that emerge before an actual model, and the flows and ruptures left by paint and thread all reconfigure the relationships between surface and interior, original and copy. In an environment where images are endlessly stored and repeated, seeing for him is not a way of quickly possessing an object, but an act that once again demands distance and time. His paintings trace how observation can remain as a material sensation through the trajectory of the hand and layers that have been erased.
