전시 제목은 루카복음 1장 29절에서 따온 구절로, 천사의 말을 들은 마리아가 당황해 그 인사의 의미를 헤아리려 했던 순간을 가리킵니다. 이 장면은 기독교에서 ‘수태고지(Annunciation)’라 불리며, 대천사 가브리엘이 마리아에게 그녀가 곧 신의
아들을 잉태하게 될 것임을 알리는 사건입니다. 축복과 선택처럼 보이지만, 사실상 동의없이 부과된 이 운명의 순간. 렘퍼트는 그 혼란과 침묵의 상태를 오늘의 감각으로 다시 호출합니다. 이번 전시는 수태고지를 출발점으로, 여성의 몸이 어떻게 권력의 언어와 시선 속에서 규정되고 소비되어 왔는지를 회화로 묻습니다.
IAH presents Cécile Lempert’s solo exhibition < Troubled at his saying > from August 23. The title is taken from Luke 1:29, the moment when Mary, hearing the angel’s words, was troubled and pondered the meaning of the greeting. In Christian tradition this scene—the
Annunciation—is the encounter in which the Archangel Gabriel tells Mary that she will conceive the son of God. It reads as blessing and election, yet it is, in effect, a fate imposed without consent. Lempert
recalls that state of confusion and silence in contemporary terms.
Taking the Annunciation as a point of departure, the exhibition asks—through painting—how the female body has been defined and consumed within the language and gaze of power.
