Ways to apply mirror(s)

Jiyong Kim’s work in painting and sculpture begins with a structural premise: the impossibility of directly perceiving oneself. Through external forms, he examines how objects are situated within contemporaneity, how they intersect internal frameworks, and how their meanings are mediated through material process. Painting and sculpture here function not as mirrors, but as systems that suspend, filter, and reframe perception across physical surfaces.

The series of bespectacled male figures, drawn from observational studies of Kim’s father, reframes the shifting body into a living sculpture—carrying diachronic presence across social and personal registers. Movement is traced, filtered, and fixed into image, revealing seeing as a contingent structure rather than a transparent act. ways to apply mirror(s) proposes perception not as resolution, but as partial construction—an ongoing negotiation between body, surface, and gaze.
